Wakhan, Somaliland and The Modern State

My latest post over at The Mantle deals with a few out of the way regions of the world: Somaliland, Abkhazia and Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor. So what do a collection of places you may have never heard about have to do with global affairs in the 21st century? Quite a lot it seems, especially when it comes to the idea of what makes a modern nation-state and what are the rights (and the limits to those rights) of a group of people to decide to breakaway and form their own country.
